Replacing the Memory Module(s)
CAUTION: Before you begin the following procedure, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. |
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as the back panel) on the computer. |
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery (see Before Working Inside Your Computer) before working inside the computer. |
NOTE: Memory modules purchased from Dell are covered under your computer warranty. |
NOTE: Your computer has two memory module connectors: "DIMM B" is located at the bottom of the computer, and "DIMM A" is located underneath the keyboard. |
NOTICE: To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the securing clips that secure the memory module. |
NOTICE: Handle memory modules by their edges, and do not touch the components on a module. |

NOTE: If a memory module is not installed properly, the computer does not boot properly. No error message indicates this failure. |
For the memory module in the "DIMM B" connector, replace the memory module cover and tighten the captive screw.
NOTICE: If the memory module cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer. |
As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information.
To confirm the amount of memory installed in the computer, click Start® Help and Support® Dell System Information.
NOTE: Since the computer operating system reserves some memory for system files and activities, the amount of available memory that is displayed will be less than the total memory installed. If you install two 2-GB memory modules for a total of 4 GB, the memory total is reported as being less than 4 GB in the system setup program and by the Microsoft® Windows® operating system. |
